If you have a dog, you already know the feeling. You finally sit down after a long day, and somehow they have claimed the warmest corner of the sofa and are looking at you like that was always the arrangement.

I did not set out to become the person who buys matching slippers and dog toys. But here I am, and honestly? Lana made it very easy.

Because really, who doesn't love a good pair of cozy pyjama pants and slippers to unwind after a long day? Especially when your dog is already claiming the sofa and looking at you like that's just how it's supposed to be. This one is for all the dog moms out there.

Creating a cozy life with our pets isn't about expensive things or perfectly styled homes. It's about surrounding ourselves with simple comforts that make everyday life feel a little warmer. A soft bed for your dog, a favourite mug in your hand, a cozy blanket on a rainy afternoon. Those small things add up.

So whether you're treating yourself, or looking for something thoughtful for the dog mom in your life, this one's for you. The ones who rearrange the whole couch for their dog. Who talk to them like they understand everything. Who honestly believe they do.

How to choose a calming bed your dog will actually use

If your dog has ever ignored a brand new bed and gone straight back to the floor, you are not alone. It usually comes down to three things: size, shape and where you put it.

Size. Measure your dog from nose to tail while they are curled up, then add about 15cm. Donut beds work because dogs sleep curled, so a bed that feels slightly snug is often the one they choose. If your dog stretches out flat instead, a rectangular mat suits them better.

Shape. Raised rims give anxious dogs something to rest their head against, which is why they settle faster in a donut style. Dogs who overheat easily may prefer a flatter, more breathable mat, especially in summer.

Placement. This is the part most of us get wrong. A bed in a busy walkway will never feel restful. Put it somewhere your dog can see you but nobody walks past, out of direct draughts, and leave it there for a week before deciding it was not a hit.

One more thing worth knowing: most dogs need a few days to adopt a new bed. Try putting a blanket that already smells like home on top, or feeding a lick mat next to it, so the bed becomes part of a calm routine rather than a strange new object.

A few questions answered

Are donut dog beds actually good for dogs?

Yes. The raised rim gives dogs a place to rest their head and creates a sense of security, which is calming for many dogs. The plush interior retains warmth and the round shape encourages curling up naturally. Most dogs claim theirs within the first day.

What can I put on a lick mat?

Peanut butter (xylitol-free), plain yoghurt, mashed banana, pumpkin puree or wet dog food all work beautifully. Freeze it for an extra 20 minutes to make it last longer and keep your dog occupied during thunderstorms, vet visits or just a rainy afternoon at home.

Is a lick mat good for anxious dogs?

Very. The repetitive licking motion activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps dogs feel calmer. Many trainers recommend lick mats as a gentle tool for managing separation anxiety or overstimulation, and it is enrichment that actually helps them settle.

Are soft plush toys safe for dogs?

For most dogs, yes. Plush toys are great for gentle play and comfort carrying. Always supervise the first few sessions with any new toy and replace it if stuffing becomes accessible. Dogs who are strong chewers may need a more durable alternative, but for snuggling and parading around the house, a soft plush is hard to beat.

Do these items make good gifts for dog moms?

Absolutely. A dog mom cap, tumbler or pair of dog-face slippers is the kind of gift that says someone really sees you. Pair a few of these together with a handwritten note and you have a genuinely thoughtful gift for any dog-loving friend, sister or yourself, no occasion needed.

Choose one little comfort to begin

A cozy home with your dog doesn’t have to be perfectly styled or filled with new things. Sometimes one softer bed, one quiet activity or one warm drink is enough to make an ordinary evening feel special.

Start with whatever your dog already loves, then add slowly. Every dog is different, so let yours show you what cozy means in your home.
