Why it matters

Why mental stimulation matters as much as walks

Stronger minds

Enrichment exercises your dog's brain and helps prevent boredom and frustration.

Lower stress

Calm activities help reduce anxiety and encourage more relaxed behaviour.

Happier dogs

A tired mind leads to a calmer, more content dog, inside and out.

A tired dog is a happy dog, but it doesn't always have to be physical exercise that does it. Mental stimulation is just as powerful, and on rainy days, busy mornings or calm afternoons at home, a good enrichment setup can work wonders for a settled, happy pup.

Dogs are built to sniff, forage, chew and problem-solve. When those instincts don't have an outlet, boredom creeps in and boredom often looks like barking, chewing things it shouldn't, or a pup that can't seem to settle. The best part? Most enrichment takes under five minutes to set up.

Lana's pick ♡

The easiest place
to start: the
snuffle mat

Lana loves to sniff, explore and forage. This snuffle mat taps into those natural instincts and helps her relax and stay focused, especially on busy or rainy days. It's one of the first enrichment tools I reach for when Lana needs something calm to do indoors. A small handful of kibble keeps her sniffing without making her overly excited.

Common questions

Good to know

Quick answers to the questions dog owners ask most about indoor enrichment.

How do I mentally stimulate my dog indoors?

Lean on your dog's natural instincts: sniffing, foraging and problem-solving. Puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, lick mats and short training sessions all work well.

These often tire a dog out more than a walk because they engage the brain so deeply.

What is the best enrichment for dogs?

Sniff-based enrichment, snuffle mats, scatter feeding, nose work, is the most calming and effective option. It settles anxious or overexcited dogs by activating their natural focus.

Rotate between a few types across the week to keep things fresh.

How long should enrichment sessions be?

Most sessions run 5 to 15 minutes. Puzzle toys and snuffle mats usually last 5 to 10 minutes, lick mats 10 to 20 minutes.

Short, frequent sessions through the day work better than one long one, and leave your dog calmer for longer.

What are signs my dog needs more mental stimulation?

Watch for destructive chewing, excessive barking, restlessness or trouble settling. A mentally tired dog is calmer than one who's only had physical exercise.

If your dog can't seem to switch off, more enrichment is usually the answer.

Which enrichment toy should I start with?

If you're unsure, start with a snuffle mat. It's the easiest to introduce, works for almost any dog, and it's the tool Lana and I reach for most on calm indoor days.

Not sure it's the right fit? Use the four questions above ("Can't settle?", "Loves to sniff?" and so on) to match your dog to the right first pick.

♡ A gentle reminder

Always supervise your dog with new enrichment toys, especially for the first few sessions. Every dog is different what calms one pup might overstimulate another. Start slow, watch how they respond, and follow their lead.
