Beach day essentials for dogs — what to pack

Everything you need for a fun, safe and stress-free beach adventure with your dog. from the bag you pack to the gear that makes the whole day easier and more enjoyable for both of you.

Everything you need for a great beach day with your dog

A beach day with your dog is one of those pure, uncomplicated joys. salty air, big open space, a pup running free. But a great beach day starts well before you arrive. The right gear means less stress, more fun, and a dog who comes home happy and well cared for rather than exhausted and overheated.

These are the eight essentials we never leave home without when Lana and I head to the beach. Everything on this list is tried, tested and genuinely used.

The 8 beach day essentials

1

Silicone water bowl

A collapsible silicone bowl clips onto your bag and folds flat when not in use. Dogs dehydrate quickly in the sun and salt. fresh water stops regularly is non-negotiable.

♡ Offer water every 20–30 minutes
2

Treat pouch

A hands-free treat pouch clips to your waist and keeps rewards accessible in an instant. Essential for recall training in an open, distracting environment like the beach.

♡ Bring high-value treats for open spaces
3

Beach towel

A dedicated dog beach towel. lightweight and large enough to shake off the sand before your pup climbs back in the car. Doubles as a rest spot on the sand.

♡ Keep one just for beach trips
4

Water bottle

A dog-specific water bottle with a built-in bowl means you can offer fresh water on the go without needing a separate container. Compact, clip-on, essential.

♡ Freeze half the night before — stays cold longer
5

Super-absorbent bathrobe

A dog bathrobe after a swim is a game-changer. It absorbs water quickly, keeps your pup warm while they dry, and means a much less soggy car ride home. Lana wears hers like royalty.

♡ Pop it on immediately after they come out of the water
6

Poop bag holder

A cute bone-shaped holder attached to the leash means bags are always within reach. No scrambling through your bag mid-walk. Leave no trace. always.

♡ Refill before every trip, not after
7

Long leash

A 5–10 metre long leash gives your dog the feeling of freedom while keeping them safely under your control. perfect for beaches where off-lead isn't allowed.

♡ Let it trail behind them for confidence
8

Microfiber towel

Smaller and faster-drying than a regular towel, a microfiber towel is perfect for a quick wipe-down of sandy paws before getting in the car. Pack two. one for the dog, one for you.

♡ Great for paw and face drying after a swim

Common questions

Good to know

What do I need to bring to the beach with my dog?

The essentials: a microfiber towel, collapsible water bowl, water bottle, treat pouch, long leash (10–15ft), poop bags and shade. For swimming dogs, a life jacket and a rinse bottle for saltwater removal are worth adding. The 8 items in this guide cover everything.

Can dogs swim at the beach?

Many do. but not all are natural swimmers. Never assume your dog is comfortable in water. Stay close, watch for fatigue, and always rinse off saltwater after swimming as it can irritate skin and upset tummies if ingested.

How do I keep my dog cool at the beach?

Bring plenty of fresh water and a collapsible bowl. offer it frequently. Find or create shade for rest breaks. Avoid the hottest hours (10am–3pm). Wet their paws and belly to cool down. Watch for excessive panting, drooling or unsteadiness. those are signs to head home.

“Some of the best days are the ones spent outside with your dog — salty air, sandy paws and nowhere else you’d rather be.”

♡ A safety note

Not all dogs are natural swimmers. never assume yours is. Watch for signs of fatigue, always rinse off salt water after swimming, and avoid beach trips during the hottest part of the day. Hot sand burns paws just as quickly as hot pavement.

Beach days with Lana are some of our very favourite memories. A little preparation goes a long way toward making them feel effortless. We hope this list helps you pack with confidence and arrive ready to enjoy every sandy, salty, wonderful moment. ♡
