When Lana first came home, I thought I'd be the one setting the rules from day one. You know how some parents proudly say, "My child would never do that"? Well, that was me... except my child happened to have four paws and a tail.
Of course, we believe in training, structure, boundaries and good manners. But if you've ever welcomed a puppy into your family, you'll know that a sense of humour is just as important.
Before Lana arrived, the rules seemed simple enough:
Dogs stay off the furniture
Dogs have designated sleeping spots
Dogs definitely don't get a say in how the household operates
And absolutely no dogs on the bed
At least, that was the plan. Somewhere along the way, however, things changed.
Without a meeting, a vote, or any formal announcement, Lana quietly introduced her own set of house rules, and somehow the entire family agreed to them without even noticing.
House Rules
according to Lana
1If I like it, it's mine.
2If it's comfortable, I'm on it.
3If you're eating, I'm sharing.
4If you leave, I will wait. (right by the door)
All day. Every day. No exceptions.

Rule 1 ยท Ownership
If I like it, it's mine
Marshie, fully settled in Lana's dog bed. He never waited for an invitation. โก
Whether it's a toy, a blanket, a sunny spot on the floor, or occasionally something that definitely wasn't bought for her, ownership becomes surprisingly flexible when a golden retriever decides they love something.
To my surprise, Lana wasn't the only one making rules. Marshie quickly decided that if Lana was getting new bedding and fluffy blankets, he deserved an upgrade too. Before long, he had claimed Lana's bed as one of his favourite lounging spots.
The funniest part? Lana didn't seem to mind at all. Most of us don't even argue anymore. We simply accept our fate and move on.
From Lana's human
Watching Marshie stretch out on Lana's fancy dog bed while Lana contentedly naps on the sofa, and neither of them seeing anything wrong with this, is genuinely one of my favourite things.

Rule 2 ยท Real estate
If it's comfortable, I'm on it
The sofa. Always the sofa. Golden retrievers have an extraordinary talent for finding the softest spot. โก
The most expensive dog bed in the house? Ignored. That role was quickly handed over to Marshie, who seemed very pleased with his "upgrade," even if it was technically second-hand.
Meanwhile, freshly fluffed pillows, clean blankets and cosy bedding were far more appealing to Lana than the fancy dog bed we carefully chose for her.
Golden retrievers have an incredible ability to locate the softest spot in any room within seconds.

Rule 3 ยท Mealtimes
If you're eating, I'm sharing
The weakest link has been identified. Lana is on the case. โก
Not because they're hungry. Not because they're starving. But because they're convinced that anything being enjoyed by a human deserves further investigation.
Lana's strategy is remarkably sophisticated. She has carefully identified what I like to call the weakest link in the family. While she knows she's not allowed food from the table, she still positions herself nearby with perfect timing and unwavering optimism, hoping a crumb might accidentally find its way to the floor.
And somehow those big brown eyes make everyone question their own rules.

Rule 4 ยท Loyalty
If you leave, I will wait
The two of them, keeping watch together. โก
This one isn't funny. It's one of the sweetest things dogs do.
Whether we're gone for five minutes or several hours, dogs often wait by windows, doors or favourite spots until the people they love come home. Lana is no different.
She knows when she's not coming along. When I tell her, "I'll be right back, okay?" she calmly turns around and settles into one of her favourite spots near the window. Usually, Marshie isn't far away.
Because Marshie is an indoor bunny, the two of them stay inside together whenever we're out. There's something comforting about knowing they have each other while they wait.
It's one of those quiet reminders of how deeply our pets love and trust us.
From Lana's human
Coming home to both of them, Lana's tail going and Marshie hopping over, is the kind of welcome that makes every errand worth running quickly.
The things we once said we'd never allow somehow become the very things we treasure most.

The rule we all end up following
The truth is that none of these are really house rules. They're little reminders that life feels different when a dog becomes part of your family.
The toys scattered around the house. The fur on the furniture (and if you have a golden, our grooming guide helps with that). The warm body curled up beside you. The routines you never planned but couldn't imagine living without. They slowly become part of what makes a house feel like home.
And if I'm honest, Lana can keep making the rules. I don't mind one bit.
How From the Heart was born โก
What started as a simple Instagram page for a golden retriever named Lana grew into something I never expected. Behind every photo was always a bigger story, one that couldn't fit inside a caption. Instagram gave me space for a photo and a few lines, but the stories needed somewhere to live. And that's how From the Heart was born.
A place for the stories behind the photos.
A place for Lana, Marshie, memories, ordinary days and the little lessons hidden inside everyday life.
A place where honesty matters more than perfection.
Somewhere along the way, I realised that the people who found Lana's Instagram page weren't only connecting with the funny reels or the cute photos. They were connecting with the stories, the memories, and the truth behind them.
Those ordinary moments, shared honestly, somehow made an impact big enough for more than 14,000 people to stay, return, and follow along. And that's what made me realise something important: people don't connect with perfection. They connect with real moments and the stories behind them.
And if one of my stories was meant to find you, then that's exactly why you ended up here. I hope it warms your heart. โก
Every story in From the Heart is written exclusively for Light Paw Studio by me and inspired by real moments from life with Lana and Marshie.
