While you're deciding

How to choose the right name for your girl puppy

A few simple things worth keeping in mind so the name you land on is easy to live with, easy to train with, and truly hers.

Keep it easy to say

A short, clear name is easier to use during training and everyday life. One or two syllables tends to stick best, both for you and for her.

Say it out loud

Try calling it across the room, and imagine using it at the vet, on walks, and when she is older. A name that feels natural to say is one you will happily use a hundred times a day.

Avoid names that sound like commands

Names that sound very similar to “sit,” “stay” or “no” can become confusing for a young puppy learning her first words. A little distance keeps training clear.

Choose a name that will grow with her

The name should suit the tiny puppy she is now and the adult dog she will become. Sweet is lovely, but pick something you will still love saying years from now.

Let her personality help

You do not have to decide immediately. Sometimes the right name becomes obvious after a day or two together, once you have seen how she moves, plays and settles in.

How I named Lana

“I knew her name before she was even born. I just knew she'd be a little light in my life.”

Maybe you've felt this too: sometimes a name arrives before the puppy does. After I lost my Labrador, Chrystal, the house felt so quiet, and somewhere in that ache I already knew this new pup was going to be the light that brought me back to myself.

So I went looking for names that meant light. I read through dozens of them, saying each one softly out loud, and then I found Lana. It meant exactly that, and the moment I read it, I knew. She had her name long before she came home, the way the right ones do.

So if you're still undecided, don't worry. Maybe your girl's name will come from a meaning that matters to you, or maybe it'll arrive the moment you meet her. Keep a little list, follow your heart, and let her show you who she is. The name that belongs to her will find its way to you.

Meet my Lana, the little light I named before she came home.

♡ One gentle reminder

Every puppy settles at her own pace. Some name themselves in a day; some take a week. Some want the cozy bed; some sleep happiest right by your feet. Follow her lead, and your girl will show you exactly what she needs.

Welcome home, little one. You're going to be so loved. ♡

Common questions

Good to know

What are good cute girl puppy names?

Some sweet girl puppy names include Bella, Daisy, Rosie, Luna, Honey, Willow, Poppy, Millie and Nala. The best name is one that feels easy to say and suits your puppy's personality. We have 100 names sorted by style in this guide if you need more inspiration.

How do I choose the right name for my puppy?

Say it out loud, a lot. The right name sticks fast. Keep it short (one or two syllables work best), avoid anything that sounds like a command, and pick something you'll still love when she's fully grown. If nothing clicks straight away, wait until you meet her. Some puppies name themselves.

When can I start using her new name?

Right away, from the very first day. Say her name warmly and calmly whenever she looks at you, then reward her with a treat or a happy voice. Most puppies start recognising their name within a few days when it's used consistently and kindly.

Can I change my puppy's name later?

Yes, you can. Puppies (and even older dogs) can learn a new name with a little patience. Pair the new name with treats and praise, use it often and drop the old one, and she'll happily answer to it before long. So if the name you picked doesn't end up fitting her, don't worry, there's no harm in a gentle switch.
